It’s cold and flu season again. How are you going to protect yourself? There are a number of good quality, organic supplements on the market to help boost immunity but my go-to is always echinacea. It is available in a variety of forms such as […]
R.H.N. Registered Holistic Nutritionist
There’s been a lot of hype about bone broth the last little while – and for a good reason! Homemade bone broth is a gelatine-rich, nutrient dense superfood and it’s a wonderful addition to a healthful diet. It contains abundant nutrients and minerals that assist in […]
While everyone is busy getting ready for the holidays and year end it’s no surprise that rest is getting pushed to the wayside. With how society has evolved through the years it’s easy to lose sight of what’s really important. The lightbulb, as magnificent an […]
I’ve had a couple people lately tell me they don’t really understand what I do so I just wanted to clarify and explain a little bit about what Registered Holistic Nutritionists do and what sets us apart from other Nutritionists and Dietitians.
Most importantly, Registered Holistic Nutritionists (RHNs) are not regulated by the government in which they practice. This may sound scary to some people, but don’t worry – it’s actually a good thing. We are still regulated through our school, The Canadian School of Natural Nutrition (CSNN). If there is any concern a client may have that cannot be resolved with their RHN directly, they are able to contact CSNN regarding the issue.
Not being regulated by the government is actually beneficial. What this means is that we’re not bound to follow Health Canada guidelines such as The Food Pyramid or Dietary Reference Intake like other Nutritionists and Dieticians. Why this is so important to me is because Health Canada guidelines takes only gender and age into account. From there they fit the different sex and age brackets all under the same umbrella not taking our uniqueness and biological complexity into account. We’re all unique beings and have different requirements than any other living thing.
Another thing that sets us apart from other Nutritionists and Dieticians is that RHN’s acknowledge the body, mind, spirit connection. This is imperative because nutritional and supplementary requirements are greatly impacted not only by diet and health status, but also by lifestyle, stress levels, emotional status, absorption, utilization capabilities and much more.
What lead me to Holistic Nutrition as a passion and a profession was my own health concerns I was plagued with as a new adult. I had spent several years with a severe skin condition that MD’s, dermatologists and allergists couldn’t seem to help me with. I was only given a continuous supply of routine antibiotics to no avail. Not to mention the creams that made the situation even worse.
I was not equipped with the knowledge to properly deal with anything relating to my health, let alone make the correct decisions. I was conditioned to listen to the professionals without asking any questions or really understanding anything about my own health. This way of living just wasn’t working for me anymore. I started to research and gain more knowledge. I even tried different diets, but it still wasn’t enough. What I would like for people to understand is how MUCH misinformation is out there that is so often accepted as factual.
The most valuable thing that I have learned from my own journey is that health conditions aren’t always as they present themselves to be. Skin conditions, mood disorders, almost anything can stem from a large variety of hidden health issues that MD’s and other government related health professionals might not know how to test for, agree with, or even believe in. This is troublesome to me because, like in my own story, the medications I was provided with were only meant to treat the symptoms, they did nothing to address the underlying cause.
For myself and other RHNs, the key is to find the underlying issue of the clients health concerns. We develop personalized plans including dietary, supplementary, lifestyle and spiritual suggestions to rebalance the body. Some cases are harder than others, and it is a gradual process, but with optimism and patience equilibrium can be achieved.
RHN’s have been trained to work alongside their clientele to help encourage their bodies to regenerate. With these positive changes, very often one will see a reduction in the health concerns being addressed. I personally like to educate and involve my clientele in every aspect of their journey. We work together to find the most comfortable health and lifestyle plan for them. I’m here to help guide my clientele to make educated decisions regarding their personal health and the quality of their results are dependent on their follow-through.
